MEDIA RELEASE 9/1/09 Grey to Green Festival Features MacArthur “Genius” Award-Winner Contact: Debra Weaver, 330-207-0994, debraweaver2000@hotmail.com The second annual Grey to Green Festival will be held on Saturday, Sept. 12, 2009, in Wick Park on Youngstown’s North Side from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Rep. Tim Ryan and Youngstown Mayor Jay Williams will kick off the festival at 10:30 a.m. in the Wick Park Pavilion. At 11 a.m., Will Allen, of Growing Power (growingpower.org) will present his vision for urban agriculture and local food production. Allen, a 2008 recipient of the MacArthur “genius” award, has developed a $250,0000 food-growing and distribution system in inner-city Milwaukee. At 3 p.m., Allen will be part of a panel of regionally and nationally recognized speakers who will discuss ‘food racism’ and the economics of urban agriculture. The entire festival is free and open to the public and will feature displays and information booths by “green” non-profits in the area, as well as vendors, locally sourced food, live entertainment, and earth-friendly activities for children. As reported in the Wall Street Journal last year, Youngstown’s 2010 Plan has a large “grey-to-green” component, which provides for protection of the current green space in the city, such as public parks, and also encourages the positive use of green space that is created by the shrinkage of the city—for example, vacant lots being used for food production or planted in trees to provide carbon offsetting and natural beauty. Grey to Green is designed to increase awareness of environmental issues in general, the grey-to-green component of the 2010 plan, and the revitalization plan for Wick Park. Located in the heart of the city near Youngstown State University, Wick Park is a lovely Victorian-era greenspace populated primarily by large oaks and ringed with a fitness trail, wide sidewalks, handsome old mansions, and broad avenues. The plan for the park focuses on drawing more activity into the interior, creating diverse habitat for plants and animals, and encouraging biophilia and a closer tie to nature in the city. Participants will include Youngstown State University; The Raymond John Wean Foundation; Grow Youngstown; Art Youngstown; Youngstown CityScapes; Defend Youngstown; Treez Please–A Community Reforestation Project; the Green Team; Oakland Center for the Arts; Youngstown Litter Control and Recycling; Commonwealth Inc.; the Northside Farmers Market; TCT Renewable Energy; Lien Forward Ohio; The Villa Shoppe; Mill Creek Metroparks; YSU SMARTS; Children’s Center for Science and Technology; Animal Charity; the Alliance for Climate Change; TimeBank Mahoning Watershed; the Audubon Society, and other environmental organizations and businesses. There will also be a Drop and Shop, where people can bring their unwanted household items, drop them off, and take something else if they wish. (Contact seellis@ysu.edu, or 330-941-2238, for information about items accepted). Also, Scott Loveland from TCT Renewable Energy will be providing an educational presentation on wind power at 2 p.m. at the Unitarian Church directly across the street from Wick Park. Children’s activities will include a visit with Dora the Explorer as well as numerous arts and crafts activities. Rob Joki and the Magic Carpet Children’s Theater will also be premiering a new play with an environmental message. Entertainment for adults will include various bands, acoustic performers and dancers. Locally sourced food will be available for purchase. More information is available at www.greytogreenfestival.org The Grey to Green Festival organizing coalition came together in 2008, with the shared belief and a shared vision that the collaboration of citizens, agencies, organizations and government can mobilize communities to address important issues and solve problems in new ways by moving from problem-driven solutions to vision-driven solutions. We believe that the 2008 festival was a tremendous success and plan to build on that experience for the 2009 festival. The organizing coalition includes the Green Team, Youngstown Litter Control, Defend Youngstown, CityScape, ReCreate, Treez Please, Grow Youngstown, First Book Mahoning Valley, The Oakland Center for the Arts, Youngstown City Schools, Art Youngstown, The Wick Park Revitalization Committee, The City of Youngstown’s Planning Department, Youngstown State University’s Environmental Studies Society, faculty and staff from YSU, as well as concerned citizens, block watches and youth groups. The goal of the Grey to Green Festival is to increase awareness of environmental issues in general, the grey to green concept in the Youngstown 2010 Plan, and the Wick Park Revitalization effort that is currently underway. The grey to green concept figures prominently in Youngstown’s 2010 Plan. For some time, Youngstown, with its population at just over 80,000 hoped to return to its boomtown roots when it was home to 165,000 citizens and a powerful steel industry. But with the new 2010 Plan, the city is one of the first to embrace shrinkage and the development of green space. Youngstown serves as a model for other rust-belt cities that must recreate and reinvent themselves after years of decline. On September 12, Wick Park will be transformed into a “green world” that will include environmentally oriented businesses, community organizations, and local and regional agencies. Throughout the park, there will be workshops, displays, demonstrations, entertainment, food, and “green” merchandise vendors. The Festival itself will be put together with an emphasis on sustainable practices – minimal energy and resource consumption, maximum recycling and waste reduction. Scot Loveland of TCT Renewable Energy will be delivering a PowerPoint presentation on the basics of wind turbines entitled “Residential Wind 101”. The presentation will be in the main pavilion and will last approximately 30 minutes. There will be a question and answer period immediately following. More information on purchasing and installing wind turbines can be found at the TCT Renewable Energy booth located on the festival grounds. |

Join Green Energy Ohio for the May 2009 Clean Energy Network Meeting in Trumbull County on Tuesday, May 26, 2009, from 7-8:30 p.m. The meeting will be held in Room 117 of the Kent State University Trumbull Campus Technology Building. The meeting is free and open to the public, especially those interested in sustainability, green building and renewable energy technologies. As the price of electricity increases and various governments provide incentives to install alternative energy devices, many homeowners and businesses are interested in small scale wind turbines. Scot Loveland will explain how wind turbines work and what is involved in a typical installation. In addition, Loveland will provide examples of energy savings that can be expected and help attendees determine if small scale wind is appropriate for their situations. Loveland is in charge of Renewable Energy Projects for Tri-County Tower Service Inc. of North Jackson, Ohio. He is a Mahoning Valley native and a graduate of Mount Union College. He was an intelligence analyst and linguist for the U.S. Army and the federal government prior to becoming a high school teacher. It was in that capacity that Loveland developed an interest in renewable energy projects. That interest led to the design of classroom curriculum based around renewable energy and green building projects. Tri-County Tower Service has been a Mahoning Valley employer in the commercial tower business since 1982. Their clients include the State of Ohio, mass media outlets, public utilities and the cellular communication industry. Tri-County is a member in good standing of both the National Association of Tower Erectors and Green Energy Ohio. The company installed their first wind turbine in 2003 and now considers renewable energy projects to be a full-time division of the organization. They offer complete turnkey construction of wind projects and are authorized dealer/installers for several small wind turbine manufacturers. More information about Tri-County’s products and services is available at http://www.tricountytower.com. A question/answer session will follow the presentation. Also, we will discuss topics for future Trumbull meetings. Clean Energy Network in Trumbull County is a group dedicated to increasing awareness in sustainability, green building and renewable energy technologies by bringing together like-minded people in the area. The Clean Energy Network in Trumbull County is a regional affiliate of Green Energy Ohio. For more information about the Clean Energy Network and the Trumbull County meeting, contact Dave Ambrose at 330-647-3666 or ambrose@infohio.org. Green Energy Ohio is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting environmentally and economically sustainable energy policies and practices in Ohio. GEO is the Ohio Chapter of the American Solar Energy Society. GEO promotes renewable energy (solar, wind, biomass and low-impact hydro) statewide by acting as a clearinghouse to inform Ohioans on sustainable energy.
